Volume Control Reloaded – Sidebar Gadget

It’s Done! Lautstärkeregler und 5.1 Profil Manager in einem kleinen handlichen Gadget.
Da ich den PC primär auch zum DVD / TV schaun nutze und sich somit meine Sitzposition vom Schreibtisch auch mal auf die Couch verlagert, ist es leider erforderlich die Lautsprecherkonfiguration der 5.1 Anlage (Teufel CEM PE) dynamisch der jeweiligen Sitzposition anzupassen.
Dieses Gadet bietet nun die Möglichkeit für 5.1 Umgebungenen verschiedene Profile zu erstellen und zu verwalten. Nebenbei zeigt es ausserdem ein Echzeit VU-Meter und regelt bequem die aktuelle System Laustärke bzw. Stummshaltung.
Bedienung:
- Lautstärke ändern: Mausrad bzw. Klick auf den Lautstärkebalken
- Stummschaltung; Mittlere Maus Knopf bzw. ein Klick auf das Lautsprecher Symbol

This is one of the most useful and best Vista sidebar gadgets online. Great work! Love that the 1.4 version allows you to click the volume to the desired level.

Nur was ich immer noch suche ist ein Gadget was zwei VU Meter (Oldschool mit Analog-Zeiger) darstellt.
Es gibt sowieso nur einen Player, der dieses darstellen kann, und zwar der VU-Player.
Aber das ganze als Gadget zu haben währe der Oberhammer. Ansonsten, klasse Arbeit !

Great. Exactly what I was looking for. Only weird thing, it always displays as 1% less than the system volume control. When Vista reports the volume level at 50%, Volume Control reports it at 49%.

This is an amazing gadget. You know what you are doing. I couldn’t find it in windows live gallery though. I would really make sure this awesome gadget get more exposure. Thank goodness your 1.2 version of the gadget had your site address in it otherwise I wouldn’t have stumble upon your newer version of the volume control.

leider kann ich keine Profile speichern unter Vista 64. Nutze eine X-FI Extreme Gamer, falls es von Belangen sein sollte. Die Treiber machen ihr eigenes Ding glaube ich und lassen das neue Vista Audio Modell bissel aussen vor!?

,denn hier kann er den Soundcontroller nicht finden.

Danke! Aber für XP wird es dieses Gadget niemals geben, es basiert auf der neuen Core Audio API von Vista und kann desshalb unter XP nicht funktionieren.

hi!
das teil ist schon ne tolle sache. aber wenn man – wie ich – den rechner auf der einen und den fernseher auf der anderen seite des zimmers hat, muss man die signale für die boxen switchen. bei mir macht das z.z. der ffdshow audio decoder. da hat man umfangreichste konfigurationsmöglichkeiten.

This is an awesome gadget. Nicely done. On my vista system, when I double click the default speakers in the sound settings on the task bar, I have far more sliders than this control has in the fly out. This control only has L,R,C,Sub, RL and RR, but I also have Line In, Microphone In, CD in and a whole bunch of other sliders for the front panel audio as well. These all are active on my system – for example I send some audio to line in and it is played to the line out at the volume I select on the slider. Anyway – if there was a way to add more sliders to this gadget, that would be awesome. I am looking at the JS code now to see if I can figure out how to do it, but it’s a long time since I was any kind of programmer.

Vielleicht sogar 2. Ein Gadget für den linken Kanal, und ein Gadget für den rechten Kanal.

There’s a strange bug in the gadget. In some instances the gadget just adds 8kb every second into the memory. this won’t stop!!!
I discovered it after my computer was beginning to get really slow after a day’s work ( while listening some music)and saw the gadget had loaded over 200 Mb into the memory. After close the memory remained in (cache), reloading the sidebar worked!
Tested: Closed and reloaded the Sidebar. many times. Weird thing is that it only occurs in some cases, not every time?
Could you check this please?

First off — Loved the gadget from the moment I first loaded it. I’ve had it running for a few months now. It is lovely.
Secondly — I, too, have noticed some resource issues with the gadget. Specifically, when I am running my system monitor, at baseline (with no other programs loaded and about 10 sidebar gadgets) I am at about 12-13% CPU load (and the OS load fluctuates between 0-4%). Removing a few gadgets or even firing up my Internet browser doesn’t significantly affect this. BUT, adding the volume gadget, my CPU usage rockets up about 10% to 22-24% until I close the gadget again.
I love the gadget and have a powerful enough laptop (AMD Dual Core, 2GB of RAM) that I can “afford” some resources to be eaten. But something is clearly leaking here…

i use it all time an can not confirm your experience for me. but you must consider that the volume control gadget does update itself each 40ms wich if you have other resource killer gadgets mulply the usage of the sidebar.
please check whats happen with a fresh started clear sidebar with only the volume control gadget in.

Great gadget, but I think there is a serious bug. I got several blue screen crashes until I removed this gadget.

Hmm, I already have the latest sound driver. And when I removed the gadget the blue screen crashes stopped (at least for now …).
I even posted the problem in a Dell forum and they tested the gadget and came to conclusion that the crash was caused by the gadget…
Too bad, because I really like the gadget …

This gadget is out for nearly one year and nobody else has reported bluescreens. Also ive checked it on several workstations and notebooks(IBM,Sony,Asus), and its running just fine.
Does it crash on all Dell maschines like yours?
Maybe there is something special for the Dell sound devices.
Iam just using the new vista core audio api not accessing directly the driver.
Wich Version of Vista do you have?
Wich speaker config do you have? (5.1,2.1, stereo..)
After wich amount of time after adding the gadget does the bluescreen occur?

I know it crashes on Dell XPS420. One has \\\’SigmaTel High Definition Audio\\\’ the other one \\\’Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer\\\’.
Both machines run on Vista Ultimate.
My speakers are stereo.
It crashes at random intervals (minutes, hours and sometimes days).
After I removed the gadget this blue screen crash has not happened again.
It may be Dell specific as you say. If you go to the Dell XPS forum (http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=Tech_Talk_XPS) you will see that there is quire a few problems with these machines.

i only got two remarks:
1) it’s not aware of “primary output” device switches; in my case: i use one soundcard for my 5.1 set and the other for headphones.
2) clicking on the volume bar doesn’t set it to the correspondend value but just de/increases the volume.

i meant: if i change the default output device the gadget doesn\\\’t recognize the change and becomes dysfunctional -> you cannot mute, change volume and the volume meters stay dark because the gadget still listens to the previously selected soundcard.
i hope this wasn’t too confusing, cause I’m getting confused re-reading it

Das ist ja ein super Gadget.
Nun benutze ich die Sidebar von Vista zwar aber mein System ist Windows XP Home.
ca.90% aller Gadgets laufen auch hier Propblemlos, hab z.B. von Dir das Network Traffic, einfach Klasse.
Könntest Du das Volume Control Gadget nicht auch für XP Benutzer kompatibel machen? Es gibt nämlich noch Mill.XP User die gerne Dieses Gadget nutzen würden, aber extra deswegen auf Vista umsteigen währ unsinn.
Mach Dir doch bitte die Mühe weil so was geiles sollten auch andere nutzen können.
Ansonsten mach weiter so!

Danke, aber da muss ich dich leider enttäuschen, für XP wird es dieses Gadget nicht geben.
Es ist einfach nicht möglich dieses Gadget in vollem Umfang für XP zu bauen da Features wie das Peakmeter oder die 5.1 Channel Steuerung keine äquivalente Standardschnittstelle in XP hat. Soll ich jetzt für jede Soundkarte nativ auf den Treiber programmieren damit die XP User dieses Gadget nutzen können.
Vieleicht macht sich ja ein anderer Gadget Entwickler die Arbeit zumindest die reine Lautstärke und Mute Steuerung für XP zu bauen. Ich jedenfalls nutze seit über einem Jahr Vista und habe absolut keinen Anspruch Gadgets für ein Betriebsystem zu bauen für das die Sidebar nicht designed wurde.
Ich verhindere ja nicht aktiv die Nutzung meiner Gadgets unter XP, wenns funktioniert schön wenn nicht dann halt nicht

SUPER GEIL !!! Vielen Dank. Das ist genau das, was ich gesucht habe nachdem der Logitech Overlay mit dem Lautstärkenindikator nicht mehr geht unter Vista.
ICh finde auch so habe ich alles auf einen Blick. Meine Sidebar enthält jetzt in folgender Reihenfolge:
- Uhr
- Prozessorlastmeter (für Quad Cores) und Speicherfüllstand
- OnlineRadio
- VolumeControl (jetzt neu -> FREU)

Schade nur, dass man nicht die Soundquelle auswählen kann.
Ich nutze einen USB Sennheiser Kopfhörer und eine SoundMax-Soundkarte von Asus für 5.1. Das sind 2 unterschiedliche Quellen.
Ach ja: leider habe ich Probleme, das Gadget in der Sidebar zu verschieben. Wo ich auch hinklicke, das Gadget kann ich nicht an eine andere Position verschieben. Daher muss ich andere Gadgets so verschieben, dass Dein Gadget danach an der richtigen Stelle “landet”. Ein bischen Sudoko also

auch von mir ein dickes lob, das gadget ist wirklich top aber bei mir funktioniert es leider nur recht eingeschränkt..
Ich kann von meinem teufel concept f (5.1) ledigliich die front speaker in der lautstärke verändern, alle anderen funktionieren zwar, wenn auch sehr leise, lassen sich aber lautstärlentechnisch nicht verändern. Jemand eine idee?

i created a new user account and, in the new one i can see the green bars. so the driver is OK
what can it be? theme/styles/performance settings or maybe services? i disabled some services and some visual elements like smooth scrolling or windows defender.. could be anything :S

hab das gadget gerade gefunden.. sehr cool! wollte mal reinschauen wie das VU meter funktioniert, aber gesehen das das javascript codiert, und nach dem decodieren immer noch obfuskiert ist… hast du was zu verbergen
Würde mich aber aus programmiertechnischer sicht trotzdem interessieren wie das geht. benutzt du die vcr_lib.dll die im verzeichnis liegt dafür?

Nein ich habe nichts zu verbergen … aber zu der Zeit als der Code noch offen war wurde mein Code oft geklaut und für kleine Modifikationen unter falschen / Fehlenden Credits missbraucht. Das ist nur eine Vorsichtsmaßnahme um das ganze ein bischen zu unterbinden.
Mit Javascript bekommt man überhaupt kein Zugriff auf Lautstärke und VU-Meter. Dafür habe ich mir die vcr_lib gebaut auf die ich dann per COM vom Javascript au zugreifen kann.

This is a great gadget ! I’m using it for adding more sound on the left speaker (to equalize the sound). But I noticed a little but annoying bug.
I made two profiles : “Casque” for Headphones in French (with an equal sound everywhere), and “Enceintes” for Speakers, with a sound of 55 at the left and 52 on the other channels.
But now I want to change it ! I tried to replace the left sound and left rear by 56 and the other on 54… But when I save the profile (with the same name “Enceintes” to erase the last one), the sound level come back to 55 for the left and 52 for the other, like the ancient profile.
Then, when I try to delete the profile, the gadget bugs and sometimes it makes a double profiles O_O…

To change and save the selected profile, just change it and press the Button with the disk symbol instead of the Button to add a new one [+].

Yep, this is what I’ve done… and it doesn’t work (the gadget bugs)
But I had difficult to uninstall the gadget too, when I uninstall the gadget, it tell me that I don’t have the right (I’m the administrator)… So, I tried to add it again in the sidebar (it wasn’t uninstalled) but a simple one without any options and only two skins appeared… I notice that I installed the first version before installing the 1.4, maybe there is some confusion ?

For clean uninstall:
1. exit your Sidebar
2. go to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\
3.delete all folders like “VolumeControlReloaded.gadget”
4. restart your sidebar

Thanks for help, but it didn’t work… I’ve deleted three folders (two reloaded and one with the first version)
But when I installed it again, the bug continue… I tried to make a new profile : “Speakers” this time, with 66 to the front and rear left, 63 to the right ones, 65 the center, 65 the subwoofer… But when I clicked on “Save new profile”, the sound volume became : 66 to the front left, and 64 to all the other. :O !
My drivers are the latest Realtek HD Audio.

Maybe your drivers does not accept such small differences. The gadget applies the given values to the system and re-reads it from there. This is beause of the dynamic scaling the system does by itself on volume change.
Try to give your loudest speaker 100 andscale down the others, save, reload, check, stepwise until the step is accepted.

I think you’re right…
It seems that only the front right and the front left are separated. For example, If I put the left at 100 and the right at 80, all the other sounds like subwoofer, center, right and left rear, come down (or up) to 80. But the front left is still at 100.
And if I put the left front at 99 or less, when I save it, the sound decrease by 1…
Thanks again Orb, I hope my drivers will be compatible in the futur (don’t buy a motherboard with HD audio by Realtek =(, they don’t even want to program an equalizer for vista !)

Ich habe ein kleines Problem. Und zwar, ist die Anzeige ja in 3 verschiedenen Farben > Grün, Orange und Rot. Bei mir gehts es aber nur bis Grün. Das heißt die anderen 2 Farebn haben noch nie geleuchtet.
Ist jetzt vllt schlecht formuliert und vllt hat ja schon jemand genau dieses Problem geschieldert. Aber ich frage trotzdem mal^^

Hallo, ich habe grad dein Gadget installiert auf Vista 64. Und es ist eigentlich perfekt vom handling.
Ich wollte profile machen aber egel wieviele profile und wie ich speichere wenn ich auf speichern klicke sind alle regler wieder dort wo R vorne und L vorne sind! kann nichts zuweisen. Kannst du mir mailen wenns da eine lösung gibt? bzw. einen anderen so schönen equalizer (hab noch keinen gefunden *g*)

Damit die Lautsprecher Profile funkttionieren muss die Lautsprecherkonfiguration im VIsta auf 5.1 gestellt sein.

Die Konfiguration hatte ich jetzt schon eingestellt….. ich kann Front links verschieben undabhängig von front rechts, aber alle anderen Kanäle richten sich an front rechts aus….. jedesmal wenn ich auf speichern drücke….

Wäre es nicht auch eine Idee, ein Standalone-VU Meter für die Sidebar zu entwickeln, welches im Hochformat den Pegel zeigt ? Eine diesbezügliche Freeware gibt es nämlich noch nicht

hi! ich würde gerne dein gadget unter xp nützen. aus den kommentaren geht hervor, dass das eigentlich nicht möglich ist. du bietest aber einen xp-patch zum download an. wenn ich die .dll in den .dlls-ordner kopiere, ändert das aber nichts. wie wird die .dll richtig installiert?
danke auf jedenfall schon für die antwort im voraus, ich suche verzweifelt so ein gadget für xp.

Du musst die DLL in dem Gadget Ordner überschreiben.
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\VolumeControlReloaded.gadget\
Aber bei XP funktioniert dann nur Lautstärke und Stummschaltung!

For the way I use my volume control, this is nearly perfect. What would make it perfect? Allow me to click on one of the vertical bars and instead of increasing the volume by 4 or 5%, increase it to the volume represented by that bar. In other words, allow me to jump straight to a volume level rather than increase it bit by bit.
I have my volume set to a good system level, but when I open a video clip on a newspaper, the level jumps up to something uncomfortable. I want to one-click it down, watch the clip then one-click it back up.
Alternatively, fit a “normal” level button for a one click return to a preset level.

bei mir das selbe problem. ich glaube, dass das gadget probleme mit realtek HD audio hat. kann das jemand bestätigen?

I have been using the gadget for a while, and i love it, but recently, probably with the installation of SP1 for Vista, the 5.1 settings are changing constantly.
In other words, if I set the center channel at 90% and the L&R channels at 80, save the setting under some name, look at it to verify it was saved, then change to some other preset, when I return back to a previously defined preset, it will be something other than what I previously set. There seems to be no relationship to what any preset becomes.
Beyond the recent technical glitch, I love it, but if you are looking for feature enhancements, consider putting your spectrum analyser in place of the volume meters when a 5.1 config is present. Also, I would love to see a volume setting that followed your mouse, either dragging it, or using a single click, instead of requiring about 20 clicks to go from minimum to maximum.
Not that I don’t love it… Just hoping to make it even better than it is, which is excellent.

ich versuchs nochmal, weil würde dieses gadget so gerne nutzen
also folgendes problem: beim profilerstellen werden nur die front-werte gespeichert. alle anderen passen sich dem front right an und lassen sich nicht verändern sondern springen immer auf diesen zurück.
gibts für das problem irgendeine lösung? habe sogar schon versucht, etwas in der profile.cfg abzuspeichern. ohne erfolg. (allerdings weiß ich da auch nicht das genaue format…?)
achja: hab vista und realtek hd audio…

Ich finde Dein Gadget wie alle anderen super!! Nur leider funktioniert er bei mir nicht richtig!! Ich kann die Lautsprecher vorne links und rechts regeln aber die anderen leider nicht!!

Gleiches Problem wie Julius: Die Regler richten sich alle nach front rechts außer front links der is unabhängig. :S Was kann man da machen?

erst mal ein super lob für alle gadgets, nutze sehr viele davon, funktionieren auch tadellos! zum lautstärkemixer eine frage, ist was von dir in planung, dass man wie beim vista lautstärkemixer alle verschiedenen sound-ausgabe programme jeweils einzeln steuern kann?

tolles Gadget! Was mir leider fehlt, dass man das Mikro mit einem klick stummschalten kann(ist bei Vista total umständlich). Wäre es möglich, dies in das Gadget einzubauen?

sehr geiles Tool.
leider ist so für mich nicht zu gebrauchen.
Ich würde mir wünschen, dass man für jedes Gerät einen Lautstärkeregler hat.
Das würde es ersparen eine genauere Abstimmung, jedesmal wenn benötigt, über das Symbol umständlich im Infobereich vorzunehmen.
Wie man das Layout jetzt genau macht bleibt dann natürlich dem Programierer.
Wenn man aber bestimmte Geräte könnte auswählen könnte, die ständig angezeigt werden, käönnte man das Tool auch auf eine erträgliche Größe einstellen.

Wenn es nicht mehr läuft, geht die Auslastung wieder auf 3% zurück.

Top Gadget. Nur funzt das mit dem 5.1 Sound nicht. Hab ne 5.1 Anlage angeschlossen, kann die aber nicht über das Gadget steuern. Es lässt sich nur der rechte und linke Frontkanal steuern. System ist Vista Home Prof. Sound ist: Realtech High definition 7.1. Vielleicht hat einer ne Lösung ??

Hi alle, Ich nochmal!
Ich hab ne Lösung für Realtek High Definition Audio besitzer gefunden. Also so gehts: Realtek Audio Manager und deren Sound Treiber deinstallieren. Neustarten, Vista erkennt das Gerät und Installiert seinen Treiber. Dann unter Systemeinstellungen Sound wählen, konfigurieren, 5.1 auswählen und fertig stellen. Dann Eigenschaften klicken, Erweiterungen wählen und Raumkorrektur aktivieren, Mikrofon mus angeschlossen sein. Dann die Prozedur durchführen und Fertigstellen. Und schwubs, nun geht alles im Volume Gadget. Ich hoffe ich konnte Euch damit helfen.

hey ich wollte das gadget auf windoes 7 benutzen geht aber irgendwie nicht. Ich erstelle ein Profil und will es sichern, doch alle anderen Werte nehmen den des ersten an und alle stehen zum Beispiel auf 55. Was mache ich falsch?

ich stelle zum Beispiel r55 l 13 … ein klcike auf speichern und alle schieberegler wandern wieder auf 55 so wie der erste wert hier im Beispiel 55

Dass man für die Kanaleinstellung und Profile Doppelklicken muss, ist nicht ganz intuitiv und sollte man vielleicht noch in der Beschreibung erwähnen (hat mich ein paar Sekunden gekostet, das herauszufinden).
Was bei mir nicht funktioniert: wenn ich mit den Pfeilen zwischen den Profilen wechsle, wechseln die Profile nicht – nur wenn ich im Drop-Down explizit ein anderes Profil auswähle, funktioniert es (aber damit kann ich leben).

is there a way to take tow gadgets for two Soundcards? I added a second one, but now i have simliar gadgets for one card. It will be awesome to control two cards with two different gadgets for Dj’ing and something else!

Super Gadget, ich benutze fast nur noch deine.
Aber ich hätte noch zwei Vorschläge:
1. Man sollte das Soundsystem auswählen können. Ich habe an meiner Soundkarte ein 5.1-System und am Mainboard ein Stereo-System. Die würde ich gerne unterscheiden können.
2. Ich hätte gerne, das man Ausgänge vertauschen kann. Bei mir ist es nämlich so, dass ich wenn ich einen Film schaue um 90° versetzt sitze und da sollen sich die Boxen auch drauf einstellen. Aber ich weiß nicht, ob das machbar ist.
3. Man sollte auswählen können, was es für ein System ist. Dass bei einem Stereo-System kein 5.1-System angezeigt wird.
Aber sonst echt ein Spitzengadget. Vielen Dank

Hi,
ich find das Programm an sich genial, nur leider funktioniert das mit den Profilen nicht.
Ich benutze Win7 x64 mit Logitech Z4 Lautsprechern, hab das Soundsystem aber auf 5.1 umgestellt.
Wenn ich ein Profil abspeichere, werden die anderen Profile auf die gleichen Werte wie im gerade Abgespeicherten verändert. Es ist also möglich, mehrere Profile zu erstellen, die sind dann aber alle gleich… Abgesehen davon dass sich alle Regler ab dem 3. an den 2. Regler anpassen (was aber bestimmt an meinem eigentlichen 2.0 liegt).
Ich würde mich sehr freuen wenn du dazu irgendwas weißt

außerdem fände ich – wie einige Vorredner schon vorgeschlagen haben – sehr praktisch, wenn ein Klick in die Lautsprecherleiste die Lautstärke zu genau diesem Punkt verändert, und nicht nur in 5%-Schritten verändert.
